Historical Origins The Black Templars originated from the Imperial Fists Legion during the "Second Founding" after the Horus Heresy, led by Primarch Rogal Dorn. Their first High Marshal, Sigismund, was the First Captain of the Imperial Fists and the first Emperor's Champion. Born from the Terra Defense War, Sigismund was chosen by Dorn as the Emperor's Champion to challenge and slay Chaos champions. After the war, he led the most fanatical and loyal warriors of the Imperial Fists to break away, founding the Black Templars to embark on an endless crusade, proving their unwavering loyalty to the Emperor. Fanatical Worship of the Emperor: The Black Templars worship the Emperor as a god, with beliefs akin to the Imperial Cult—rare among Space Marines. Their iconography (crosses), armor engravings, martyrdom ethos, and pre-battle prayers reflect this religious fervor. Endless Crusade: Their core tenet is the "Eternal Crusade," viewing it as their mission to purify the galaxy and eliminate all enemies of the Emperor. Death in battle is seen as a sacrifice to the Emperor, a supreme honor, driving their fearless valor. Rejection of Psykers: The Templars deeply distrust psychic powers and have no Librarians, believing Warp energies are sources of corruption and psykers risk falling to Chaos.
